Do It Yourself…easier said than done!

When a project is considered a Do It Yourself task, familiarize yourself with everything that is involved BEFORE starting it. A lot of Do It Yourself projects require more than just two hands and, more often than not, more tools than you may have in your garage. In this section, we’ll detail different projects including materials, tools, how long the project might take, and whether or not you should consider having another person on site to assist.

Tearing out drywall doesn’t have to be a two man job. Replacing drywall (especially in the ceiling) is! It’s extremely important that whoever is assisting can lift a heavy 12ft piece of drywall over their head. Measuring length, width, and around lighting is also critical…no one wants to lift this drywall over their head more than once. If you’re attempting to do drywall as a DIY project, be prepared! It’s not as easy as you think.

Insulation isn’t our favorite project to complete. It’s messy, dirty, dusty, and time-consuming. This is definitely one task you’ll want to have someone help you with. We rent a hopper, get all the insulation we think we’ll need, and schedule the entire day for it. It’s obviously preferable to start insulating early in the morning or on a cool day. The attic gets hot quickly. This is blown in insulation for a renovation we’re working on. One person feeds the hopper while the other guides the hose in the attic. Neither job is exciting or fun!

Correcting or replacing headers isn’t always a task for more than one person. However, when double windows or support beams are being installed, we recommend that you have someone with you. Not only are they extremely heavy, but they’re difficult to balance and nail without another set of hands. This might be obvious for people who are familiar with the building process, but not everyone is. ALWAYS check with a professional when structural issues are involved!
